In the past, it was believed that erectile dysfunction was a problem that only affected older men. However, recent studies suggest that up to 26% of men under 40 deal with erectile issues. It’s harder for them to talk about such sensitive matters, but many of them are seeking solutions to help them last longer in bed.

There are various theories about what causes ED for men in their 30s. It’s believed that the use of drugs and alcohol can reduce a man’s sexual ability, leading to problems with early ejaculation. Some people think access to pornography may be a contributing factor as well. The causes of ED are more often psychological or medical, and you can consult with our doctors if you’d like to find out more about this.

Obesity is an unexpected trigger for ED in men under 40. Part of it is related to body image. Obese men may feel sexually unattractive, and this low self-esteem can translate into performance problems. On a medical level, obesity increases the likelihood of conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure, both of which can affect a man’s ability to get and maintain an erection.

Erections happen when blood rushes to a man’s penis in response to physical, emotional, or sexual stimulation. If a man has any issues with his circulation, he will have a hard time in the bedroom. If his arteries are clogged, the blood won’t flow effectively, and this can leave his penis flaccid. Similarly, diabetes manifests as unstable levels of blood sugar.

Excess blood glucose can damage your blood vessels, which means they won’t effectively transfer blood to your body, including your penis. This will have a direct effect on your ability to have intercourse with your partner. Ironically, men who use steroids to make themselves more attractive may end up affecting their virility levels.

Hormonal causes can also be responsible for ED. If a man’s testosterone levels are low, or if his pituitary gland is producing excess prolactin, his erectile function is likely to be affected. Psychological factors come into play as well, and they can affect men of any age.

If a man is experiencing stress, depression, anxiety, or emotional turmoil, it’s likely to affect both his desire for sex and his ability to perform in bed. The issue can become even acuter if his emotional distress is somehow related to his partner. If they are having challenges in their relationship, it may be hard for him to connect emotionally or sexually, and this psychological unease can translate into ED.

Fortunately, there are many solutions and treatments for ED. It begins with open communication, both with his partner and his doctor. He should begin by sifting out any non-medical causes. Having an honest, open conversation with his partner could go a long way in easing his bedroom problems. Once psychosomatic triggers have been eliminated, you can talk to a doctor to see if you need any medical assistance.
