Many people do not realise how common Premature Ejaculation (PE) is in Australia. PE is one of the leading sexual health challenges in men all over the world closely followed by Erectile Dysfunction, ED. As men’s sexual health receives more attention and empathy, more men are opening up and becoming more expressive about their challenges.

The Australian Longitudinal Study on Male Health recently carried out a study with the help of participation from more than 12,000 men. The researchers found that 54% of the participants had experienced at least one specific sexual problem in the three months that preceded the study. Predictably the leading challenge was premature ejaculation with 37% of the participants admitting to reaching climax too quickly.

What is Premature Ejaculation?

Premature ejaculation can be defined as reaching a climax or ejaculating before the time desired by you or your partner. For some men, this happens just before their partner climaxes, while for others, it could happen even before penetration.

Premature ejaculation is more of a challenge in men than women because the men typically lose their erection after ejaculation and cannot continue in the sexual activity for a while. This usually results in the unsatisfactory sex and frustration of their partner.

What is Sex Therapy?

Many sexual health challenges have deep psychological causes and effects. Sex therapy is designed to address the root cause of your sexual dysfunction. Medical remedies may alleviate the symptoms of sexual dysfunctions and deal with the physical challenges you may be facing. Sex therapy, on the other hand, seeks to find and address psychological issues that may be manifesting as sexual health challenges.

Sex therapy does not actually involve any touching or performance of sexual acts. However, the therapist may prescribe exercises and activities that you and your partner can perform in the comfort of your home as part of the treatment. Sex therapists often employ multifaceted approaches to break through your conscious barriers to understand the reason for your challenges. These can include,

• Intergenerational Approaches
• Narrative and Psychodynamic Approaches
• Behavioural and Cognitive-Behavioural (CBT) Approaches
• Problem-Focused Approaches

By addressing the source of your problem, the therapist can equip you with useful skills that you can use long after the sessions to keep the hurdle in check. Whether you only recently started experiencing PE or have been struggling with it for a long time, sex therapy could give you a new perspective on the problem. Call for a consultation to discuss your options.

Many men are turning to sex therapy as a way to address their PE and a wide range of other sexual challenges. It is good to note that sex therapists are not opposed to the use of medication but prescribe treatment based on the psychological analysis of each patient. For some people, it is enough to do some particular types of physical exercises to make them last longer in bed. However, some people need more intense sessions to deal with deeper underlying traumatic issues.
